Deep Cleaning Your Apartment: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Deep Cleaning Your Apartment: Why, When, and How to Do It Right

Deep cleaning is more than just a more thorough version of regular cleaning. It is a systematic process where every square centimetre of your apartment gets cleaned — including spots you normally forget during routine maintenance. Professionals recommend deep cleaning at least twice a year: in spring after the winter season and in autumn before the heating period begins. In this guide, we will show you how to do it step by step.

When Is It Time for Deep Cleaning?

There are several situations when deep cleaning is essential. Spring cleaning after winter removes accumulated dust, boot salt, and winter grime. Autumn cleaning prepares your home for the heating season — clean radiators heat more efficiently. We also recommend deep cleaning after renovation (construction dust penetrates everywhere), when moving (into or out of an apartment), after illness in the household (disinfection), or after a long holiday when dust accumulates.

Phase 1: Preparation and Planning

Before you start, prepare everything you need: a quality vacuum with HEPA filter, bucket and mop, microfibre cloths (at least 4 colours), all-purpose cleaner, acidic bathroom cleaner (for limescale), kitchen degreaser, glass cleaner, rubber gloves, and a ladder or telescopic duster for high ceilings. Plan the whole day — deep cleaning a 2-bedroom flat takes a professional 4–5 hours; a non-professional should expect 6–8 hours.

Phase 2: Kitchen — The Most Demanding Room

The kitchen is the heart of the home and the room where the most grease and dirt accumulate. Start with the cooker hood — remove filters and soak them in hot water with baking soda (3 tablespoons per litre) for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, clean the oven — coat the interior with a baking soda and water paste and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Clean the fridge inside — remove all shelves and drawers, wash them in warm water with a vinegar solution. Clean the microwave — heat a bowl of water with lemon slices for 3 minutes; the steam loosens grime. Wash all cabinets inside and out, disinfect worktops, and clean tile grout.

Phase 3: Bathroom — Fighting Limescale and Mould

Limescale is the biggest enemy of bathroom cleanliness. Spray all surfaces (taps, shower enclosure, bathtub) with an acidic cleaner and let it work for 10–15 minutes. Meanwhile, clean the toilet — apply product under the rim and let it sit. Treat tile grout with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar — let it fizz for 10 minutes, then scrub with an old toothbrush. Check ventilation — a blocked fan can cause moisture and mould. Replace the shower head if it is clogged with limescale.

Phase 4: Bedroom — Clean Sleep

Change all bedding, rotate or flip the mattress (recommended every 3–6 months). Vacuum the mattress with a special attachment — millions of dust mites live in mattresses. Dust the tops of wardrobes — a spot 99% of people skip. Vacuum upholstered furniture, clean mirrors, and wash windows from the inside.

Phase 5: Living Room

Move furniture and vacuum underneath — a surprising amount of dust accumulates here. Clean upholstered furniture — vacuum and consider professional extraction cleaning. Dust all surfaces including electronics, books, and decorations. Shake out or machine-wash curtains. Wash windows from both sides.

Phase 6: Floors — The Final Step

Do floors last — all the dust from previous steps is now on the ground. Thoroughly vacuum the entire apartment, then mop. Use a special wood product for parquet. For tiles, hot water with all-purpose cleaner. Vacuum carpets and consider professional cleaning.
